Women’s Health
OnetoOne Physical Therapy & Aquatics understands the intimacy of
women-specific issues. Our professional and caring staff are devoted
to promoting healthier lifestyles for women by providing one-on-one
care and customized treatment programs in an encouraging atmosphere.
Incontinence
Incontinence is the voluntary loss of bowel or bladder control. There
are several conditions that my cause incontinence. Your OnetoOne
Physical Therapist will conduct an individualized evaluation and
treatment generally consisting of: muscle re-education and strengthening
via the use of biofeedback, behavioral modification and exercise.
Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a silent and potentially disabling disease that is characterized
by a decrease in bone mass. It weakens bones, making them more fragile
and increases the risk of fracture. Other problems associated with
osteoporosis include loss of height, spinal curvature, difficulty
moving and decline in functional abilities. Osteoporosis is a preventable
disease and should not be considered an inevitable consequence of
aging.
Your physician can determine your level of risk for fracture and regulate medication and hormone levels. OnetoOne Physical Therapy & Aquatics has developed a multi-faceted approach to aid in the prevention, management and treatment of all stages of osteoporosis. Our therapists will prescribe the appropriate exercise to help improve or prevent further decline in bone density and promote postural correction. Knowledge of home safety and fall prevention, as well as patient education and body mechanics instruction to maintain the highest level of function and independence, are also key components of each individual program.
Low Back Pain & Pregnancy
As many as 80% of women will experience back pain during their pregnancy,
generally in the 2nd and 3rd trimester. As pregnancy progresses, the
combination of extra body weight and hormone changes will affect the
musculoskeletal elements of the lower spine and pelvis. Physical therapy
can help address muscle imbalances and weakness, assist with the lifestyle
modification and ergonomic instruction as will as utilize manual therapy
techniques as indicated to reduce pain.
Pelvic Pain
Many women experience pelvic pain at sometime in their life. Pelvic
pain has many causes and should be evaluated by your physician.
Pelvic pain can be due to chronic spasm or hyper tonicity of the pelvic
floor muscles or other musculoskeletal dysfunction. Here at OnetoOne
Physical Therapy, we have physical therapists trained to comprehensively
evaluate and treat musculoskeletal and pelvic floor dysfunction via
the use of biofeedback. This computerized system allows us to assess,
visualize and treat pelvic muscle dysfunction.
What is the Pelvic Floor?
The pelvic floor is a group of muscles, tendons and ligaments that support
the area around the anus and female and male sex organs. It also
helps to support the bladder, uterus and bowels. A weak or damaged
pelvic floor often contributes to incontinence or pelvic pain due
to childbirth, aging or medically-related illness. Pelvic pain and
bowel or bladder control problems may improve with physical therapy
as the therapist guides you in retraining and strengthening the
pelvic floor muscles.
Patients may benefit from physical therapy if they are experiencing:
- Involuntary release of urine or stool when coughing, sneezing or laughing
- The need to urinate frequently or the sudden, uncontrollable urge to urinate
- Pain in the pelvic region, hip, abdomen, thighs, and lower back
- Pain with intercourse
- Constipation
How Can Physical Therapy Help?
Pelvic floor rehabilitation uses the principles of physical therapy
to provide a structured program for muscle reconditioning. Physical
Therapy treatment includes a musculoskeletal evaluation of the pelvic
floor and associated muscles and structures, including biofeedback.
The therapists will develop a comprehensive treatment program in order
to help control unwanted loss of urine/stool, control frequent urination,
improve constipation, and reduce pain in the pelvic region.
Treatments May Include:
- Pain relief through advanced manual techniques, including abdominal, vaginal and rectal myofascial approaches
- Pain relief through electrical stimulation
- Training of the pelvic floor musculature including utilizing the advanced technology of biofeedback
- Bladder Diary
- Individualized core stabilization, strengthening and conditioning programs
- Education information on the anatomy and function of the pelvic floor and on dietary changes
- Dilator training
